Why should we recycle? Actually recycling is one of the best things you can do. It takes so little effort to do it knowing whats recyclable and putting it in one bin. But really it's a gift to all of us and especially to our own kids. Recycling helps the environment in a big way. For example when you recycle a can, that means we don't have to make another one from scratch. That saves the earth energy and materials. And a lot of stuff turns into other things. Like certain plastics are recycled into fleece jackets. But what about here in Philadelphia? Or on your own street? Or in your home? What does recycling do for you and your neighbors? The simple answer is Recycling PAYS!
Sure, you say, I know that recycling is good for the environment, but who has the time? We know it takes a little effort. Effort to remember to do it. To wash the cans, flatten the food boxes, and put it out every week on trash day. But think for a minute about the satisfaction you could get from recycling about all the ways it pays. Think about doing your part to help a citywide movement succeed. Think about setting an example for neighbors who may not have gotten the message yet. Think most of all about the children who are watching how you live your life, looking for clues about right and wrong and what it means to take responsibility. So, does it pay to recycle? We think you have your answer.
Neighborhoods benefit from recycling through cleaner streets and sidewalks, and just a stronger sense of community. They also benefit in ways that aren't always visible. Recycling helps create jobs, for example. And earns money for the city to help fund new housing, revitalize neighborhoods, contribute to kids' programs...you name it, recycling helps. And sometimes the recyclables themselves are used. For example did you know that the glass ground from your bottles actually can be used to fill potholes? Pretty amazing.
Recycling helps conserve natural resources. That means we're helping to make sure the earth is still here for our grandchildren. Recycling saves energy just because we can make fewer cans, bottles and paper. That helps keep fuel prices down and cuts down the amount of factory smoke and fumes going into the air we breathe. |
